The Salem girls 4×800-meter relay team made a triumphant return to the OHSAA state track and field meet this past weekend in Dayton, securing a second-place finish in the Division II competition. After narrowly missing out on a podium spot last year, the team was determined to make a statement this time around.
With a lineup featuring Megan Stafford, Maggie Hall, Maggie Hopple, and Rylee Hutton, the Salem squad exceeded expectations and surprised both competitors and themselves with their impressive performance. Despite being seeded 10th among the 18 teams, the Quakers showcased their talent and teamwork to secure the runner-up spot.
“We just wanted to podium this year,” Stafford said. “We fell short last year with ninth place, so our goal this year was podium. We weren’t expecting that at all. I think it was just a big surprise.”
The team’s chemistry and dedication were evident throughout the race, as they clocked a time of 9:18.36, significantly faster than their previous performances. The silver medal finish was a fitting conclusion for seniors Stafford and Hutton, who have shown exceptional leadership and commitment to the team.
The success of the Salem relay team serves as motivation for the younger members of the program, demonstrating the rewards of hard work and perseverance. Both Hutton and Stafford have plans to continue their athletic careers in college, with Stafford committing to Youngstown State for cross country and track and field, and Hutton signing with Mount Union for soccer, basketball, and track and field.
The impressive performance of the Salem girls 4×800-meter relay team in Dayton highlights their determination, teamwork, and potential for future success in both track and field and beyond.
