The Beijing auto show is currently showcasing China’s vision for the future of automobiles, with a focus on electrification and digital connectivity. A total of 117 new models are making their debut at Auto China 2024, ranging from cutting-edge innovations to more subtle novelties.
One of the highlights of the show was the presentation by Xiaomi, a major Chinese smartphone maker that is venturing into the car market for the first time. Xiaomi announced that it had received over 75,000 orders for its first car, the SU7, within four weeks of its launch, with a price range of $29,800-$41,400.
The trend of consumer technology companies entering the car market is driven by the desire for connectivity. Companies like Xiaomi and Huawei are looking to integrate their products seamlessly into the lives of their customers, across all devices including cars.
Some Chinese automakers are taking the concept of connectivity to new heights, with vehicles like the Zeekr Mix offering a living space experience. The Mix is an electric vehicle with an interior that can transform into a small room, catering to the needs of younger families.
While electric vehicles have been dominating the market in China, there is still a demand for gasoline-powered cars. Chery Automobile Co. highlighted its hybrid SUV, the EXEED Yaoguang C-DM, at the show, emphasizing the importance of developing both electric and hybrid vehicles.
Luxury electric vehicles are also gaining traction in China, with companies like BYD introducing high-end models like the U8 off-road SUV, priced at $150,000. Volvo, under the Geely group, offered a simpler approach with the user-friendly EX30 electric SUV, priced at $29,000-$36,000.
The Beijing auto show is a testament to China’s commitment to innovation in the automotive industry, with a focus on electrification, connectivity, and catering to the diverse needs of consumers.
