Southlake in Newmarket is making strides in cancer care this Cancer Awareness Month by introducing innovative technology to diagnose and treat women’s cancer in the community. With a focus on early detection, the Regional Cancer Program at Southlake is enhancing its services with the addition of new mammography machines, the MyoSure System, and the MOLLI 2® System.
Lorrie Reynolds, director of the Regional Cancer Program, emphasized the importance of early detection in treating breast cancer and other women’s cancers. The new mammography machines will expand the breast cancer screening program to accommodate 1,500 women, with two machines featuring biopsy capabilities to streamline the diagnostic process.
In addition to the mammography machines, Southlake is introducing the MyoSure System, a cutting-edge technology that can aid in detecting female reproductive cancers. This advancement is expected to benefit around 200 women per year, thanks to the support of donors through the Here is Where Cancer Meets its Match campaign.
Sara Temple, chief of surgery at Southlake, expressed pride in the advancements being made to improve women’s health and patient experiences in the community. With the World Health Organization projecting a significant increase in cancer diagnoses by 2050, the upgrades at Southlake are crucial in providing leading-edge care close to home.
The generosity of donors has played a significant role in these advancements, with Jennifer Ritter, president and CEO of Southlake Foundation, expressing gratitude for their contributions to enhancing cancer care for women in the community. The introduction of these new technologies marks a significant step forward in the fight against cancer at Southlake.
