The Northern Territory Government has announced a groundbreaking initiative to introduce digital identification cards, following in the footsteps of New South Wales. With an investment of $20.66 million, Territory residents will soon be able to access their driver’s licences and Evidence of Age cards on their smartphones.
This budget announcement aims to streamline identification processes for Territorians, allowing them to store their digital licences in a secure digital wallet. The digital IDs will also be integrated with other NT Government systems, such as the Banned Drinker Register and NT Police portable devices.
While hard copies of licences will still be issued, the digital versions are set to revolutionize the way identity information is managed and shared. Chief Minister Eva Lawler emphasized the government’s commitment to providing efficient and accessible services to the community.
Minister for Corporate and Digital Development Selena Uibo highlighted that the digital driver’s licence aligns with the NT Government Digital Transformation Plan, ensuring a user-friendly, secure, and reliable system. The introduction of digital IDs is part of the broader initiative to create a central digital platform for all NT Government services.
Hospitality NT CEO Alex Bruce expressed enthusiasm for the plan, noting the convenience and efficiency that digital IDs bring, especially for tourists and patrons of licensed venues. With an average of 450,000 BDR scans per month, the digital driver’s licence is expected to simplify access to services and enhance customer experience in the Territory.
