A recent survey has revealed that nearly 30% of Gen Z adults in the US identify as LGBTQ+, marking a significant increase compared to other generations. The report, released by the Public Religion Research Institute, found that 28% of adults between the ages of 18 and 25 identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community.
The survey, which included 6,600 participants, also found that Gen Z adults are less likely to affiliate with religions. Additionally, both Gen Z and millennials were more likely to identify as LGBTQ+ than Republican.
However, the LGBTQ+ community has faced challenges, as over 200 pride flags were stolen from a display in a Massachusetts town just days before a local pride event and the start of Pride Month. The flags were taken from the center of Carlisle, with town officials expressing disappointment over the theft.
Despite the setback, community members quickly came together to replace the flags before the scheduled pride event. Organizers emphasized that the incident would not distract them from celebrating Pride Month.
The theft of pride flags is not an isolated incident, as similar attacks have occurred across the country in recent years. Advocacy groups have reported a surge in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, with over 500 bills proposed in 2023 alone.
As Pride Month continues, LGBTQ+ communities and allies are taking steps to promote safety and inclusivity at events across the US. The incidents serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community and the importance of standing together in solidarity.
