Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced former movie mogul, has been hospitalized in New York City for a battery of tests following an appeals court ruling that nullified his 2020 rape conviction. Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, stated that his client was moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after his arrival in the city jails on Friday.
Aidala expressed concern for Weinstein’s health, describing him as a “train wreck” physically and in need of significant medical assistance. Weinstein, who has been suffering from various health issues including cardiac problems, diabetes, sleep apnea, and eye problems, is undergoing tests at the hospital.
The New York Court of Appeals recently vacated Weinstein’s conviction, citing that jurors were exposed to evidence unrelated to the charges he faced. As a result, his 23-year prison sentence was erased, and a retrial was ordered. Prosecutors plan to retry Weinstein on charges of forcibly performing oral sex on a production assistant in 2006 and raping an aspiring actor in 2013.
Weinstein, who is also serving a 16-year prison sentence in Los Angeles for another rape conviction, remains in custody at Bellevue. Aidala mentioned that Weinstein’s mental faculties are intact despite his physical ailments.
The lawyer criticized the treatment Weinstein received during his transfer to New York City, claiming he was denied basic necessities like water and food. Aidala plans to advocate for a retrial after Labor Day and is scheduled to meet with Weinstein on Monday. The state corrections spokesperson had no comment on the allegations of mistreatment.
