After 28 years of dedicated service, Dean Hensley, the news editor for the Hendersonville Times-News, is bidding farewell to the newspaper that has been his home for more than half of his life. His last day at the paper is set for May 17, marking the end of an era for the veteran journalist.
Dean’s journey at the Times-News began in 1994 when he landed a part-time news reporter position at the age of 25. Despite initial doubts about breaking into the newspaper business, Dean’s perseverance and passion for storytelling led him to a successful career that spanned over two decades.
Throughout his time at the paper, Dean covered a wide range of stories, from high school sports to breaking news events. He worked alongside a dedicated team of journalists and editors who became like family to him. Dean fondly remembers the camaraderie and shared experiences with his colleagues, including memorable encounters with sports celebrities like Richard Petty.
As Dean reflects on his time at the Times-News, he expresses gratitude to his loyal readers, colleagues, and friends who have supported him along the way. While he is embarking on a new career path outside of print journalism, Dean remains excited for the challenges that lie ahead.
In his farewell message, Dean thanks everyone who has been a part of his journey and signs off with a quote from Saturday Night Live’s Dennis Miller: “Guess what, folks? That’s the news, and I am outta here.” As Dean closes this chapter of his life, his legacy as a dedicated journalist and storyteller will continue to inspire those who have had the pleasure of knowing him.
