The beauty of childbirth is a life-changing experience, but for many women, it can also be a dangerous one. According to a recent report from the World Health Organization, one woman dies every two minutes from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. This alarming statistic sheds light on the urgent need for improved maternal health care worldwide.
In the United States, the situation is particularly dire. Black women are three to four times more likely to die in childbirth compared to their white counterparts, making the U.S. one of the most dangerous places to give birth overall. New York state Sen. Samra Brouk has been a vocal advocate for Black maternal health, citing the high maternal mortality rates in Monroe County as a driving force behind her advocacy efforts.
To address this crisis, Brouk has championed the importance of doula care in reducing maternal mortality rates. Thanks to her efforts, as of January 2024, any birthing person on Medicaid in New York state can access doula services and be reimbursed through their insurance. This represents a significant step forward in ensuring that all women have access to the care they need during pregnancy and childbirth.
Phyllis Sharp, the owner of Royalty Birth Services, has been a key figure in providing support to mothers in Monroe County. With a passion for birth that dates back to her teenage years, Sharp has assisted over 200 mothers through her business, offering guidance and support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Together, Brouk and Sharp are working tirelessly to ensure that all women receive the quality health care they deserve during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives. By raising awareness, advocating for policy changes, and providing essential support services, they are making a difference in the lives of mothers and their infants across New York state.
